Snakes: The scaled beauties we share our world with

Snakes are reptiles, one of the leading animal vertebrate groups (animals with a backbone).

Their Latin name is Serpens. Many people think snakes will bite and hiss and spit their venom at you, but most people are wrong. There is scientific proof that animals only attack when they feel threatened or get near their younglings.

Fun facts

Snakes, like all reptiles, are ectotherms. They rely on external sources to give them Energy

They can smell with their tongues

They can see heat

They hear with their jaw, and their venom can kill and cure

Some species can even FLY !!!

National Geographic states, ‘There are more than 3,00 species of snakes on the planet, and they are found everywhere except Antarctica, Ireland, Greenland, Iceland and New Zealand.’ They go on to say, ‘Snakes are cold-blooded, and many species are venomous, and only some have the power to harm and potentially kill a human being.’

Bones in the snakes’ upper jaw pick up vibrations from rodents and other prey scurrying across the ground. So, if you live in Australia, when your parents tell you not to stomp on the floor, this is why.
